Proposal for a Nuclear Bomb Memorial on Kiribati Island. This memorial is a memory of the lives lost and the ongoing suffering caused by the local nuclear bomb testing which has devastated thousands of lives, not just those directly exposed to the radiation, but also the children of those who were affected, and has rapidly accelerated the decay of the shoreline significantly reducing the lifespan of the island. At the atrium is a viewing platform with a spiral staircase that leads all the way to the top.
The exterior facade is made using mushroom brick that slowly rotates out increasing visibility the further up the building you walk. It was chosen due to it's low environmental impact and because of it's natural decay behavior that would last until that section of the island is swept up by the rising ocean. A metaphor for the degradation caused by the nuclear testing. Onsite is also a natural water desalination system, that intends to help reduce the need for imported clean water.
